Connect by USB

For Canon EOS bodies that keep the count out of their photos, like the 7D Mark II, 5D Mark III and 70D. Works in desktop Chrome or Edge.

Read-only. Camera settings stay as they are.

USB setup for Mac, Windows and Linux

Charge the battery, switch the camera on, turn Wi-Fi off and use a USB cable that carries data. Many micro-USB cables only charge. Quit EOS Utility, Lightroom, Photos and Image Capture first.

Mac: right before you click Connect, run killall -9 PTPCamera ptpcamerad in Terminal. macOS grabs cameras the moment they're plugged in.

Windows: Windows puts Canon cameras on its own driver, which Chrome can't use. Switch it to Windows' built-in WinUSB driver in Device Manager, no download needed. Step-by-step Windows guide. Or skip the computer and use Chrome on an Android phone with a USB OTG adapter.

Linux, ChromeOS and Android Chrome with a USB OTG adapter: usually works as is.

How Nikon records the count

Nikon stores the count in the maker notes of every JPEG and NEF, in a field called ShutterCount. It's there on everything from the D70 to the D850 and the Z series. Coolpix compacts don't record it.

Some Z bodies also record a separate mechanical shutter count. When a photo has both, ShutterOdo shows the total and the mechanical number side by side. The Z 9 and Z 8 have no mechanical shutter at all, so their count reflects use rather than shutter wear.

How to check a Nikon shutter count

  1. Take a new photo. That way the count is current.
  2. Copy the original file off the card. Don't export it from Lightroom or Photos first.
  3. Drop it on the checker above. The count appears in about a second.

Nikon questions

Does it work with NEF raw files?

Yes. NEF and NRW raw files carry the same maker notes as JPEGs.

Why is my Nikon count different from the file number?

File numbers like DSC_0412 reset at 9999 and when you reset numbering. The shutter count never resets except after a shutter replacement.

Why does my Z camera show two numbers?

The total includes every exposure. The mechanical count includes only shots taken with the mechanical shutter, which is the one that wears out.
